Dont forget Scotland

The Scottish Parliamentary elections next year present a danger and an opportunity.

Not sure how many folk on here are outside Westminster but I think the Scottish elections next year will be a strange indicator to the next 10-15 years over the UK.  Will the "protest" vote go to the Lib Dems (which wouldnt make much sense given they form part of the Executive) or will the SNP be able to break out of their rural heartlands in to the hitherto Labour dominated central belt?  Personally I reckon the outcome will be one of two things.  First, a Labour minority Executive, meaning nothing can get done for 4 years or, second, an SNP led coalition, probably with the Lib Dems and a few others desperate to see what a Ministerial car is like.

Labour have taken places like Glasgow for granted for a bit too long, sadly resulting in some rather poor backbench MSPs.  This, in turn, could lead to them being booted out.  Hopefully some creative destruction but the problem with losing in places like this is that you don't always get them back.  They need to consider getting rid of some of the candidates who simply see the Scottish Parliament as "the next thing to do.

Incidentally, this minor rant was prompted by a quick story in the Edinburgh Evening news that Labour have selected their candidate for the Edinburgh West seat (currently held by Lib Dems.)

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#1)

One of the major problems with Labour in Scotland, and the one thing that's annoying those of us who are active in Scotland is that we are slagged off, attacked by the liberals and we never do anything about it.
We are in a coalition where the Liberals manage to take credit for everything that goes right and avoid the blame for everything that goes wrong.  Yet Jack McConnell and the cabinet never do anything to fight back, too scared in case it damages the coaltion.
I think that the Labour party would be better as a minority government than as thw Lib Dem's whipping boy.

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#2)

Yeah, I agree with most of that, they take credit, we take the blame.  Something mildly unfair about that!  Don't think we help ourselves much though, Jack doesnt distinguish between the party and the Executive which is something you have to do when you are in a coalition albeit carefully.

I am moving back to Edinburgh after 3 years in London so am hoping to get back in to the swing of things in time for the elections next year!

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#3)

I think that it would be a lot better for Labour if we went into a minority administration, the Lib Dems bring nothing to the Executive, then when difficult decisions are to be taken they run for cover, glad to see that Bristow Muldoon is on the attack, hope that more of the MSP's get their fingers oot and start hamering the francise party.

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#4)

We need better quality MSPs.  I like Muldoon, one of the more savvy politicians as well in Scotland.

Incidentally, if anyone knows any one in the Edinburgh Labour Party can they let me know.  Need to get a contact for when I go back up.

Thanks,

G

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#5)

I agree lets get out of coalition with the fib dems. Nicol Stephen is one of the worst politicians ever.

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#6)

On the plus side, the civil service hate him more than the Labour Party too.  Lazy sod apparently!

Re: Dont forget Scotland (#7)

I think the SNP may actually be threatening that coalition.
