It was unpleasant enough being confronted with Tory MP Bob Spink's gross bigotry today, yet when surfing for more details, I discovered this discussion thread on the Daily Mail website.




Bob has, in short, said that black people are more criminal than white people. Of course, the new, friendly Tory party isn't going to expel him because, despite the PR gloss from David Cameron, The Conservative Party is still the home of the most hateful shower of bigots and racists.

Amazingly the "discussion" there has been moderated and edited by the paper's web team...  It will be interesting to see whether my comment makes it.  And I hate to think what's been left out of some of those other remarks!

Bob Spink's comments are a disgrace. The 'former' clearly meant that he held a view that black people had more criminal tendancies than white people. We all know that in the CJS there is institutional discrimination against BME members, and this is reflected disproportionaltly in the numbers of BME people in prison and mental health institutions. Spink's views are just a tip of the iceberg in the Tory Party, and Cameron needs to disown them quickly.

Are you sure that he deserves the racist accusation in this case?

The view he endorsed was that "a lot more criminals are black than white" based on a home office answer. He didn't seem to make the step of crossing the line to the opinion "black people have more criminal tendancies than white people" in his BBC interview.

When pressed on whether he meant perhaps more were charged or more were convicted (for example) he said no, insisting that he meant precisely what he said.

Hi Alex - sorry to post this here but couldn't spot a "contact us" button anywhere!!  Have you noticed that quite a few 'spam' comments are appearing on threads?  Is it possible to remove them as they appear to be links to something or other?

There were some spams in old threads, but today it seems they were busy spamming all threads!
When I came home and log in this evening, I saw many new comments and I thought "oh, lots of comments this afternoon", then I realized they were all spams!

Black people are - as I understand it - proportionality more likely to be in prison than white people.

The problem is that this guy's comments can and will suggest - particularly to those more prone to shouting than to reading around the issue - that there's a causal link between race and criminal activity.

I note that the Mail still hasn't put my comment up (and it wasn't a mad rant or anything, honest!)  So - at least we know that the balance of comments on the page there don't necessarily reflect the balance of responses.
