BNP: should an MP ever debate with them?

I was struck by this recent posting on the Stop the BNP website about a Tory MP who point blank refused to waste his precious time debating "loathsome policies" with the BNP - after being challenged to a face to face meeting with leaders of the far right party.

Was he right? Should an MP ever give the BNP credibility and legitimacy by entering into dialogue with them?

No, don't give them an ounce of respectability at all; treat them with the contempt that they deserve. They should be regarded as pariahs, the scavengers and detritus of politics.

That is one of those topics where people's views are so entrenched one way or another, that I don't even think that non-BNP sympathisers could have a sensible debate about whether you should or shouldn't.

What does this mean in practice? Do Labour councillors in Barking or wherever just get up and walk out when BNP councillors come in to the room? I'd love to know.

I agree with you mark - it is easier to take a theoretical stance than confront the practicalities. Part of me wants to engage the dim, lazy bigots to expose them for what they really are.

Spot on Mark, it's a difficult issue and has parallels in Northern Ireland where in Local Government our collegues in the SDLP have to deal with loathsome DUP and Sinn Fein, although in that case realpolitik has to win the day. Personally, why give the BNP the oygen of publicity by debating with them.
We need to address the issue of ehy Blue Collar voters are turning away from us.

Steady on Dermot the DUP may hold objectionable views on Catholics and Sein Fenn may hate the DUP but the two will have to work together if we are to have a lasting peace in NI. What is so objectionable about the BNP is that it is overtly a racist party and would discriminate on the grounds of a persons ethnicity and religion other than Christianity. It is a facist party and doesn't believe in democracy but in intimidation and threats of violence to minority communities.
A bunch of thugs. Keep well away from them and don't debate because they will simply use that against you. Their literayure is packed with misinformation and downright lies. Unfortunately a lot of our working class people believes it all and support them.

You shouldn't debate with people who say things like this;

Of course, this exact quote is from a Senior Civil Servant so that's OK. But just imagine the BNP quoted her speech in their pamphlets, what are you going to do about that?

To what end would they quote her speech? The Labour Party or the Tories, or even the Lib Dems could qoute her speech in a pamphlet but it depends in what context they would do this

The BNP leaflets flooding Barking and Dag in May could well say.. ' Even the the Spymaster General MI5 warned against Muslims planning to bring the city to a standstill with nuclear fallout... we are all under threat...' or something to that effect.
My point is if, Intelligence exists then take these cells out before they get serious and start practicing what they preach; and lets have the Muslim Council cooperating with MI5 and exposing the dangerous elements within.
